The Long Way Home

Turned away by kin—“No room in the inn”
Mary and Joseph sought shelter that night.

Jesus, the Christ child, born in a shed,
Lived on the streets much of his life.

To one who would follow him, Jesus once said,
“Foxes have holes, and birds have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

“Where is the Christ Child?”
people now ask.
The answer is clear.

the Christ Child is here
Standing in line
Sleeping in shelters
or out on the street

The Christ Child is here
Standing before you
Giving you blessing
hoping for bread

The Christ Child is here
Standing before you
Giving his blessing
Giving his life

Take hold of his blessing
give thanks for his life
Respond with your love
for the one facing you.

For the Christ Child is here
Standing before you
in people you meet
out on the streets
